THE DANCING PRINCESSES

Book by Patricia Goldberg  -  Music & Lyrics by Jeff Reim

Our version of the Grimms' Twelve Dancing Princesses has been reworked for just three princesses, and features  some tight-harmony trios in the style of the Andrews Sisters amid the stirring score.

SYNOPSIS

As the show opens the three princesses, Marissa, Larissa and Narcissa, are sitting on their beds talking about how exhausted they are from their evening of fun. They have again worn holes in their shoes and they know their father, King William, will be angry. Before they go to sleep, they promise each other never to tell their father how they wore holes in their shoes ("We've Got A Secret").

The next day the guard brings Alistair, a wealthy gentleman, before the King. The King asks Alistair if he has figured out the mystery of how the princesses get the holes in their shoes. Alistair says he has not and the King promptly sends him to the dungeon with all the other men who could not solve the mystery. The princesses, who have witnessed this, are confronted by their father for the answer, but they refuse to admit knowing how the shoes get the holes ("Holes In Their Shoes"). Unhappy, the King sends his daughters away and leaves the room.

Renefred, a poor soldier from the king's army, comes in to see the King about solving the mystery. The guard tells him to think twice about this or he too will end up in the dungeon. He then goes to get the king. While Renefred reconsiders, an old woman enters and speaks to him. She tells him that she can help him solve the mystery. She advises him not to drink the wine the princesses will give him at night and gives him a magic cape that will make him invisible. As the old woman exits, Renefred sings of his new-found confidence ("I Can And I Will").

Renefred tells the king he is ready to solve the mystery and the king says he has only one night to do it. Marissa overhears the conversation and warns Renefred of being overconfident. Narcissa and Larissa come to get Marissa and also meet Renefred ("I Can And I Will Reprise"). He takes his leave and the princesses plot to take care of him just like the others.

That night, the guard shows Renefred where he is to keep watch and again warns him of the danger, then leaves. The princesses are getting ready for bed and prepare a sleeping potion for Renefred. Larissa offers him the sleeping potion and Renefred pretends to drink it and goes to sleep. The princesses have changed to their ball gowns and Marissa opens a secret trap door which they escape through. Renefred puts on his magic cape and follows them through the trap door.

[If done in TWO Acts, Intermission goes here]

As the lights come up, the three princesses have met their princes at an enchanted underground castle. Larissa is feeling nervous tonight, but she is not sure why. As the festivities begin the soldier accidentally steps on Larissa's gown and it frightens her because she sees no one there. To calm her down Prince Sullivan brings her a drink. They others are busy dancing the night away. Meanwhile the invisible Renefred is taking some branches from the gold and silver plants. Larissa hears the cracking noises but no one else does. Princess Sullivan whisks Larissa away to dance ("Dancing On Air"). Feeling better after the dance, the couples decide to make a toast. When Larissa looks for her goblet, it is gone because Renefred has taken it. To make her feel better they again all start to dance until there are holes in their shoes.

Renefred is first to return to the palace bed chamber and quickly goes to his place and pretends to sleep. The girls arrive right behind him. They see him sleeping and talk about how he too will end up in the dungeon, but Larissa is not so sure ("We've Got A Secret Reprise"). The next morning the guard takes Renefred to the king. The princesses arrive and the king asks Renefred if he has solved the mystery. He says he has and as proof pulls out the things he has taken from the enchanted palace. The princesses then admit that they go dancing every night and that is how they get the holes in their shoes. As a reward the king asks Renefred to choose a bride. He chooses Larissa, who agrees to marry him. The king also frees all the men who have been thrown in the dungeon and decides that his daughters have grown-up. He will not treat them like little children anymore and he'd love to have them dance every night in their own palace ("This Is One Of Those Good Days").
